NOAA emergency response crews in Louisiana.
NOAA response banner.
Even before Katrina hit land, NOAA employees were preparing for its effects. NOAA's Scientific Support Coordinators provided critical infrastructure assessments, discussed possible points of impact and began pre-storm staging of critical personnel in the region. In addition to personnel expertise, NOAA applied the latest technology in assisting officials making critical determinations on when responders could enter potentially dangerous areas. Through coordinated use of remote sensing and aerial photography, NOAA field teams produced maps of flooded areas as well as situation maps of pollution incidents and salvage operations. Among the other challenges that faced responders was how to deal with numerous sunken or grounded vessels.
